Barcelona have agreed to sign Gabriel Jesus from Arsenal for €10 million plus add-ons, securing an experienced No.9 to strengthen Hansi Flick’s attack. With just one year remaining on his Arsenal contract, the Brazilian became available for a relatively modest fee.
The timing of the move makes sense for both clubs.
With Jesus entering the final year of his Arsenal contract, which expires in 2027, the Gunners were willing to accept a lower fee rather than risk losing him for nothing next summer.
Mikel Arteta also has Kai Havertz and Viktor Gyökeres ahead of him in the pecking order, making Jesus increasingly expendable at the Emirates.
For Arsenal, cashing in now represents a sensible piece of business, while Barcelona have taken advantage of the situation to secure an experienced forward for just €10 million plus add-ons.
For Barcelona, it is a useful solution at a crucial moment.
With Robert Lewandowski and Ferran Torres gone and the club’s pursuit of Julián Álvarez proving complicated, Flick needed another established striker.
Jesus brings experience at the highest level and, at 29, still has plenty to offer.
His versatility could be particularly valuable under Flick.
Jesus can lead the line, drift into wide areas, link with teammates and press from the front.
Those qualities make him more than just a penalty-box striker and should fit naturally into Barcelona’s high-intensity approach.
The move will also see Jesus reunite with several familiar faces from his Manchester City days. Rodri, João Cancelo and Eric García are all now at Barcelona.
This will give the Brazilian an immediate connection within the dressing room and potentially make his transition to Catalonia much easier.
Financially, Barça will also be pleased with the deal. €10 million plus add-ons for a forward of Jesus’ experience represents relatively little risk, particularly given the club’s need for another senior attacking option.
Jesus does not have to become the next Lewandowski. Barcelona simply need him to provide goals, movement, pressing and experience while giving Flick another reliable option up front.
Arsenal get a fee for a player entering the final year of his contract, while Barcelona get an experienced striker at a bargain price.
For both clubs, the deal makes plenty of sense.
