FC Barcelona retained their lead at the summit of La Liga with a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Rayo Vallecano at the Camp Nou. The Blaugranas lacked their usual attacking fluency and were forced to rely on defensive resilience, a set-piece goal from Ronald Araújo and a standout goalkeeping display from Joan García to secure all the three points.

Fresh off a commanding 7-2 victory over Newcastle United at the Camp Nou in the second leg of the UEFA Champions League Round of 16, Barcelona sealed progression with an emphatic 8-3 aggregate scoreline.

The Blaugrana now advance to a quarter-final showdown against Atlético de Madrid.

Back in La Liga action, Barcelona host 14th-placed Rayo Vallecano on a sunny Sunday afternoon for Gameweek 29, with temperatures hovering around a pleasant 16 degrees Celsius.

Hansi Flick has made just one change to the starting eleven, retaining his preferred 4-2-3-1 system. Ronald Araújo returns to the side in place of Eric García at right-back, with the Uruguayan also captaining the team.

Eric García, who was withdrawn early against Newcastle due to muscle fatigue, has only recently begun training away from the group as a precaution. Fortunately, he is expected to rejoin full team training after the international break.

Meanwhile, Iñigo Pérez has set up Rayo Vallecano in a similar 4-2-3-1 formation, with particular attention on Isi Palazón, who is deployed as a striker and has a reputation for troubling Barcelona.

This fixture carries added significance for Hansi Flick’s side, who were held to a 1-1 draw in the reverse league encounter. Meanwhile, the visitors arrive in poor away form, currently on an eight-match winless run on the road in La Liga.

Their last away victory in the competition dates back to October 2025, when they defeated Levante.

The visitors made the brighter start, looking to exploit Barcelona’s high defensive line. An early cross into the box found Carlos Martín at point-blank range, but his effort was superbly blocked by Joan García, as the Catalan goalkeeper stamped his authority on the game from the outset.

Seven minutes in, Raphinha became the first player to be booked after a late challenge on Florian Lejeune. The decision appeared harsh, drawing audible frustration from the home crowd, with referee Adrián Cordero Vega showing little leniency in the early stages.

In the 13th minute, Raphinha squandered a golden opportunity to give Barcelona the lead. A misplaced pass from Pathé Ciss was intercepted near the halfway line, allowing the Brazilian to surge through on goal.

One-on-one with Batalla, he dragged his effort wide with his weaker right foot, leaving both the player and the crowd in disbelief at the missed chance.

In the opening 20 minutes, Pedri and Fermín have stood out with moments of real quality, showcasing sharp touches and intelligent turns to emerge as Barcelona’s most influential players so far.

In the 20th minute, the Blaugrana appealed for a penalty after Lamine Yamal drove to the byline, cut inside Ciss, and went down following contact.

While the challenge from the Senegalese defender appeared slightly clumsy, referee Adrián Cordero Vega was unmoved, judging that there was insufficient contact or force to warrant a spot-kick.

The decision left both the Barcelona players and the home crowd visibly perplexed in the early stages of the match.

A minute later, Barcelona goalkeeper Joan García required brief medical attention, raising some concern given his recent calf issue that forced him off against Newcastle. However, the Catalan shot-stopper was able to continue without any problems.

By the 23rd minute, Barcelona’s pressure began to intensify. Lamine Yamal delivered a deep, bouncing cross to the back post, where Raphinha arrived but could only loft his effort over the bar.

The breakthrough came almost immediately from a corner a minute later as Barcelona capitalised on a corner as captain Ronald Araújo rose at the back post to head home João Cancelo’s vicious delivery.

With the Rayo goalkeeper, Augusto Batalla caught in two minds after coming off his line, Araújo was left with a simple finish to give the hosts a 1-0 lead.

A couple of minutes later, Lamine Yamal attempted to weave his way through the Rayo defence but took a heavy touch and ended up clipping Ciss with a late challenge, earning himself a booking. As a result, both Barcelona wingers now find themselves on a yellow card.

In the 30th minute, Rayo Vallecano’s Argentine goalkeeper produced a superb save to keep his side in the game.

Barcelona flooded the box, and the ball eventually broke to Raphinha on the edge of the area. The Brazilian curled a powerful effort towards goal, which took a slight deflection on its way through, forcing Batalla to react sharply and tip the ball onto the bar.

Four minutes later, Rayo captain Óscar Valentín was shown a yellow card after cynically pulling back Fermín, who had turned sharply to break away from him.

By the 35th minute, Barcelona had firmly settled into the contest, effectively restricting Rayo Vallecano, who failed to register a shot on target since Carlos Martín’s early effort in the opening minute.

Rayo’s next real opportunity arrived three minutes before half-time, when Ciss rose to meet a corner but headed his effort over the bar. The midfielder, already active defensively, continued to pose a threat from set-pieces, though the visitors were once again unable to trouble the scoreboard.

The fourth official indicated three minutes of added time, but with little of note occurring, referee Adrián Vega soon brought the first half to a close as the players headed down the tunnel.

Hansi Flick will likely be urging his side to find a second goal after the break to secure a more comfortable lead, especially with the closing stages of the half showing signs of tension. The German coach will be keen to avoid any slip-up on home soil.

Ahead of the second half, Barcelona made their first substitution, with Ferran Torres replacing an underwhelming Robert Lewandowski.

Meanwhile, Iñigo Pérez responded with a double change for Rayo Vallecano, as captain Óscar Valentín, already on a booking, was taken off in a precautionary move for Pacha Espino, while Carlos Martín made way for Álvaro García.

The second half got underway with Barcelona looking to assert control once again. Their first opportunity came in the 53rd minute, when the influential Fermín López clipped a clever cross into the box for Raphinha. The Brazilian controlled it well, but his effort from inside the area was quickly closed down by Rayo defenders.

Fermín went to ground after delivering the pass and required brief medical attention.

With Frenkie de Jong already sidelined and both Eric García and Gavi not fully match fit, the last thing Hansi Flick would have wanted to see was another midfielder picking up an injury. Fortunately for Barcelona, Fermín was able to continue.

Four minutes later, Pedri threaded a delightful pass through to Lamine Yamal, who evaded Ciss this time and drove into the penalty area. The La Masia graduate looked to guide his effort into the bottom corner, but the shot drifted just wide of the far post, marking Barcelona’s most promising moment of the second half up to that point.

The hosts came close again almost immediately, squandering a golden opportunity to double their lead. Ferran Torres made a sharp run down the flank and, from a tight angle, delivered a dangerous ball across goal that narrowly evaded Raphinha. Whether it was intended as a shot or a cross remained unclear, but crucially, the scoreline stayed at 1-0.

Just before the hour mark, Iñigo Pérez turned to his bench once again, introducing fresh legs with a double substitution. Unai López replaced Gerard Gumbau, while Jorge de Frutos came on for Pedro Díaz.

Hansi Flick responded shortly after with changes of his own, as Dani Olmo replaced Fermín López and Marc Casadó came on for Marc Bernal, both like-for-like substitutions.

Rayo Vallecano soon began to threaten, knocking on Barcelona’s door from a set piece. A corner was whipped into the box, where an unmarked Unai López made a clever run to the near post and glanced a header towards goal. However, Joan García reacted sharply once again, producing a crucial save to preserve Barcelona’s slender 1-0 lead.

Three minutes after that save, Rayo’s left winger Fran Pérez was shown a yellow card for a cynical challenge on João Cancelo, handing Barcelona a free-kick in a dangerous area.

Moments later, Pathé Ciss also went into the referee’s book for a late tackle on Lamine Yamal. At this stage, the only area in which Rayo held the advantage was in the disciplinary record, leading Barcelona 3-2 in yellow cards.

The party atmosphere inside the Camp Nou had noticeably faded, replaced by a sense of nervous tension among the home supporters with Barcelona holding onto a slender 1-0 lead.

Dani Olmo looked to ease those nerves momentarily, picking up the ball on the edge of the area and unleashing a long-range effort, but his shot drifted wide of the bottom corner.

By the 72nd minute, Pau Cubarsí went into the referee’s book after a reckless challenge on Isi Palazón, a moment that summed up Barcelona’s growing frustration.

With just 15 minutes left on the clock, the Catalan side looked uncharacteristically subdued, lacking their usual fluency, urgency, and cutting edge in the final third. Despite creating clear opportunities, they were unable to convert, a stark contrast to the clinical finishing and relentless attacking rhythm typically associated with Hansi Flick’s system.

With just 8 minutes remaining in normal time, the game produced a moment of chaos as Rayo Vallecano’s Argentine goalkeeper Augusto Batalla rushed off his line, only to be dispossessed by the relentless pressing of Raphinha.

The Brazilian reacted quickly, squaring the ball to Lamine Yamal, but from a tight angle, the youngster could not pick out a teammate, his cross flashing harmlessly across goal as Batalla remained on the ground.

Shortly after, Hansi Flick opted for an attacking reshuffle, withdrawing Lamine Yamal. While not at his sharpest, the 18-year-old had shown a few flashes of brilliance. He was replaced by Marcus Rashford, who slotted in on the left wing, allowing Raphinha to switch to the right.

Iñigo Pérez responded immediately, making his final change by bringing off Fran Pérez, who was already on a yellow card, and introducing Sergio Camello.

In the 83rd minute, Rayo squandered a golden opportunity. Pacha Espino latched onto a ball over the top and drove forward with intent, but after cutting onto his left foot under pressure from Barcelona’s recovering defense, he leaned back and fired his effort well over the bar.

Five minutes later, Rashford’s pace once again caused problems as he burst into open space, only to be brought down recklessly by Isi Palazón, who was rightly booked, becoming the seventh player to be cautioned in what had turned into a feisty contest.

Rayo continued to push, and moments later, Jorge de Frutos unleashed a powerful strike destined for the far corner. However, Joan García remained alert, producing a superb save to tip the effort around the post and preserve Barcelona’s slender advantage.

Concerns soon arose for João Cancelo, who appeared to pick up a knock and was unable to continue.

Hansi Flick turned to Xavi Espart for the closing stages, handing the youngster just his fourth senior appearance for FC Barcelona.

While he was not heavily involved this time, it was another sign of Flick’s growing trust in him.

Espart has been making the most of his opportunities, and his composed showing against Newcastle in the Round of 16 first leg has clearly strengthened the manager’s confidence in his ability to help see out games in crucial moments.

The fourth official signalled six minutes of added time, setting up a tense finale as Rayo pushed forward with growing momentum.

Barcelona’s poor decision-making was summed up in the 94th minute when Dani Olmo, instead of releasing Rashford into space, chose to take on defenders himself, ultimately losing possession and a valuable opportunity to put the game beyond doubt.

There was little further action before referee Adrián Vega brought proceedings to a close, confirming a nervy but important 1-0 victory for Barcelona, who managed to hold firm and secure all three points.

The Catalan side may not have been at their fluent best, but they will gladly take the result given how nervy they looked throughout and how disjointed their attacking play often was.

Barcelona have been imperious at the Camp Nou this season, maintaining a flawless record of 15 wins from 15 La Liga home matches, scoring 47 goals and conceding just eight.

In doing so, Hansi Flick has also equalled Pep Guardiola’s club record for the most consecutive home league victories, with 15 straight wins on home soil.

Joan García was a deserving recipient of the MVP award, with his four crucial saves proving decisive as Barcelona edged past their opponents.

Later on, Sunday, Los Blancos secured a 3-2 victory in the Madrid derby, a result that not only allows Barcelona to maintain a four-point lead at the top over Real Madrid, but also sees Atlético Madrid slip to fourth place, now one point behind Villarreal CF.

Seven Barcelona players, including Joan García, Pau Cubarsí, Pedri, Dani Olmo, Lamine Yamal, Ferran Torres, and Fermín López, will now join the Spanish national team for international duty.

The Catalan side will return to club action for a demanding run of fixtures commencing with a game on April 4 with a trip to the Wanda Metropolitano to face Atlético Madrid.

The club will host a couple of home games, including a UEFA Champions League quarter-final clash against the same opposition, followed by the Barcelona derby against RCD Espanyol.

The schedule intensifies further as they are set to face Atlético Madrid three times within a span of ten days, including the decisive second leg of their European tie.

Meanwhile, Rayo Vallecano will resume their La Liga campaign after the international break with a home fixture against Elche CF, followed by a Conference League encounter against AEK Athens.
