Barcelona’s trip to Levante and Real Madrid’s visit to Oviedo will be among the fixtures under review by Spain’s CTA Technical Committee this Tuesday, following Matchday 2. The committee will assess on-field decisions and VAR interventions from the weekend.

According to Mundo Deportivo, the committee will take a closer look at two key moments: Balde’s handball in Levante – Barça and Tchouaméni’s tackle before Mbappé’s first goal in Oviedo – Real Madrid. Led by David Fernández Borbalán, the panel will review both the on field decision and the subsequent VAR intervention.

The CTA’s technical review counts for up to 20% of a referee’s overall evaluation. Another 45% comes from the referee’s report plus an AI component. Inside that 45%, 40% is meant for AI (not yet implemented) and 60% comes from the written report, which looks at things like decision-making, discipline, match control, positioning, fitness, and how the ref manages players and coaches. The TV observer team adds another 20%, made up of 13 analysts watching the game on the broadcast feed.

For VAR officials, a newly created VAR analyst group contributes up to 55% of the reliability score for decisions, on top of what the Technical Commission decides.

Once the international break ends, the CTA plans to start publicly explaining the most debated calls such as Balde’s handball and the incidents in Oviedo. These briefings will be led by Marta Frías, a former international referee and now the CTA’s head of institutional relations, and she may be joined by a member of the Technical Committee. A panel including José Luis Oltra, José Ramón Sandoval, and former international Fernando Morientes will help clarify the decisions for the public.
