FC Barcelona were busy in the 2026 summer transfer window, strengthening almost every area of Hansi Flick’s squad. The club focused on adding experience and quality for the present while also investing in players who could become important figures for the future. From the blockbuster arrivals of Anthony Gordon and Rodri to the experienced additions of João Cancelo and Dominik Livaković, FC Barcelona have addressed several of the squad’s weaknesses. With Gabriel Jesus also arriving to help replace Robert Lewandowski, the Catalan club has assembled a squad with considerably more depth and tactical flexibility.
Anthony Gordon: Barça’s Statement Signing

Anthony Gordon was FC Barcelona’s biggest investment of the summer, arriving from Newcastle United in a deal worth around €80 million including add-ons.
The Englishman has signed a contract until 2031, highlighting the club’s belief that he can become a key part of Hansi Flick’s plans for years to come.
Gordon’s importance, however, goes beyond his ability to play on the wing.
He gives FC Barcelona something their other wide options do not. He is the only naturally right-footed winger in the squad with significant experience in the position, while Lamine Yamal and Raphinha are both predominantly left-footed.
That gives Flick greater balance and allows him to vary the positioning and movement of his front three.
His pace, relentless pressing and work rate also make him a natural fit for Flick’s high-intensity style.
At the same time, Gordon’s experience playing centrally gives the manager another option at striker, an especially valuable quality after the departures of Robert Lewandowski and Ferran Torres.
For a club looking to add more variety to its attack, Gordon is therefore more than an expensive winger.
He gives Flick another tactical dimension and could become one of the most important additions to Barça’s new-look attack.
Rodri: The Midfield Leader FC Barcelona Needed

If Gordon represents Barça’s biggest attacking investment, Rodri could be their most important signing from a tactical perspective.
The Spanish midfielder joined from Manchester City for an initial fee of around €65 million, with another €5 million potentially available in add-ons. He signed a contract until 2030.
Rodri brings something Barça have lacked for some time: an elite defensive midfielder with vast experience at the highest level.
His ability to control possession, protect the defence and dictate the tempo should give Flick greater balance in midfield. With Pedri, Frenkie de Jong and Gavi already available, Rodri also gives Barça the option to build a midfield capable of competing against Europe’s strongest teams.
Karim Adeyemi: Adding Pace to the Attack

FC Barcelona also strengthened their attack with the signing of Karim Adeyemi from Borussia Dortmund.
The German forward arrived for around €29 million and signed until 2031.
Adeyemi gives Flick another explosive attacking option. He can operate from either flank but is also capable of playing centrally, allowing Barça to change their attacking shape without necessarily making a substitution.
His familiarity with Flick is another advantage. The Barça coach previously handed Adeyemi his Germany debut, meaning the manager already has an understanding of his qualities.
Gabriel Jesus: Experience After Lewandowski

The departure of Lewandowski left FC Barcelona needing another experienced striker, and Gabriel Jesus eventually filled that role.
The Brazilian joined from Arsenal for around €10 million plus add-ons and signed a contract until 2029.
Jesus is not a direct replacement for Lewandowski in terms of playing style, but he offers Flick something different. He can lead the line, drop deeper to link play and operate from wider positions.
Considering the scarcity of proven centre-forwards in the market, FC Barcelona managed to secure an experienced option without making another huge financial commitment.
João Cancelo: Versatility at the Back

Barça made João Cancelo’s return permanent after his previous loan spells at the club.
The Portuguese full-back arrived from Al Hilal on a free transfer and signed until 2029.
His importance comes from his versatility. Cancelo can operate on either flank and has the technical ability to move into midfield during possession, giving Flick another tactical tool.
For a Barcelona squad competing on multiple fronts, an experienced player who can cover several positions can be extremely valuable.
Dominik Livaković: Experience Between the Posts

Barça also strengthened their goalkeeping department by signing Dominik Livaković from Fenerbahçe.
The Croatian goalkeeper arrived for an initial €2 million, with a further €500,000 reportedly available in add-ons, and signed until 2030.
Livaković brings considerable international and European experience and provides competition for Joan García.
Rather than simply signing an inexpensive backup, FC Barcelona have brought in a goalkeeper capable of challenging for playing time. That competition could be particularly important over a long season.
Jesse Bisiwu: One for the Future

Barça’s summer recruitment was not limited to established first-team players.
Jesse Bisiwu arrived from Club Brugge for around €8.5 million and signed until 2031.
The Belgian winger is viewed primarily as a long-term investment. His pace, physical ability and dribbling give FC Barcelona another promising attacking prospect, although expectations will need to be managed given his age.
The long contract also reflects the club’s belief that he could eventually develop into a first-team player.
Hamza Abdelkarim: Another Young Striker

Barça also secured the permanent signing of Hamza Abdelkarim from Al Ahly after initially bringing him to the club on loan.
The deal cost around €1.5 million plus add-ons, with the young striker signing until 2029.
Abdelkarim represents another long-term bet rather than an immediate replacement for an established striker. FC Barcelona can afford to develop him gradually while their more experienced forwards handle the pressure of first-team football.
FC Barcelona’s Transfer Strategy
What stands out about Barça’s summer window is the balance between immediate solutions and long-term planning.
Gordon, Rodri, Jesus, Cancelo and Livaković all bring experience that can help Flick immediately, while Adeyemi, Bisiwu and Abdelkarim offer varying degrees of potential for the future.
The club have also avoided relying on one type of player. They have added pace in attack, experience in goal, versatility at full-back and a world-class presence in midfield.
A Squad Built for Flick’s Demands

Ultimately, FC Barcelona’s transfer window success will depend on how these players fit into Flick’s system.
The German coach demands intensity, pressing and tactical flexibility, and the new arrivals largely complement those requirements.
Rodri can provide greater protection behind the midfield, Gordon and Adeyemi add speed and pressing in attack, Jesus gives Flick another experienced option up front, while Cancelo increases flexibility across the defence.
The financial investment has been significant, but FC Barcelona have not simply spent for the sake of spending. Most of their major additions address identifiable weaknesses within the squad.
Now comes the difficult part: turning those signings into a team capable of challenging for every major trophy.
