Frenkie de Jong’s MCL injury has kept him out since the 2026 World Cup, where he reportedly played through pain. With his return expected in October, the midfielder could come back to a different FC Barcelona, with Pedri and Rodri forming a new partnership, Bernal and Gavi competing for minutes, and Raphinha and Pedri taking on greater leadership roles.

Frenkie de Jong played through discomfort at the 2026 World Cup, starting all four of the Netherlands’ matches before their elimination by Morocco.

He reportedly continued playing despite the knee problem, even receiving injections during the tournament.

The full extent of the injury only became clear after he returned to FC Barcelona.

The club confirmed that De Jong had suffered a tear of the medial collateral ligament (MCL) in his right knee.

He opted for conservative treatment instead of surgery, which has extended the uncertainty around his recovery.

De Jong is now expected to return around October, although FC Barcelona have not confirmed a specific date for his competitive comeback.

De Jong Could Return to a New Midfield

The biggest challenge waiting for De Jong may not be his recovery. It could be the midfield he returns to.

His absence has allowed Pedri and Rodri to develop a partnership that gives Hansi Flick a strong balance between creativity and control.

Pedri can dictate the tempo and create from deeper areas, while Rodri offers defensive protection and positional discipline.

De Jong remains different from both.

His ability to carry the ball through pressure and progress possession gives Flick another option, but he may no longer be an automatic starter.

Instead, his return could see him competing for minutes in a midfield with more quality and variety than before.

Bernal and Gavi Add More Competition

Marc Bernal is another player who could influence De Jong’s minutes.

The La Masia midfielder has continued to develop and offers Flick a natural option in deeper areas.

His positional discipline and ability to protect the defence could make him particularly useful alongside Pedri.

Gavi provides a different profile. His intensity, pressing and aggression allow Flick to change the character of the midfield depending on the opponent.

With Pedri, Rodri, Bernal and Gavi all offering different qualities, De Jong will have to earn his place rather than simply reclaim it.

The Captaincy Picture Has Changed

De Jong’s role has also shifted from a leadership perspective.

He remains part of FC Barcelona’s five-man captaincy group, but Raphinha and Pedri have moved ahead of him in the hierarchy after being chosen as the first two captains for the 2026/27 season.

Pedri’s rise is particularly significant.

He is now not only one of Flick’s most important midfielders but also one of the team’s leading voices.

That does not reduce De Jong’s importance, but it does show how the squad has evolved during his absence.

De Jong Still Offers Something Different

Despite the competition, De Jong remains difficult to replace.

Pedri brings control and creativity. Rodri provides defensive stability. Bernal offers discipline, while Gavi brings intensity.

De Jong can combine elements of all four.

His ability to receive under pressure, turn away from opponents, and carry the ball through midfield gives Flick a different solution, particularly against teams that press aggressively.

That makes his return valuable even if his role changes.

The Challenge Ahead

Frenkie de Jong is expected to return from his MCL injury in October, but he will not necessarily be returning to the same FC Barcelona he left.

Pedri and Rodri have a new partnership, Bernal and Gavi are competing for midfield minutes, while Raphinha and Pedri have taken on greater leadership responsibilities.

De Jong still has a unique profile within the squad, but his challenge will be to prove that his qualities can add something the new-look midfield cannot provide without him.
