Javier Pastore is one of the most outstanding Argentine players in recent years. ‘El Flaco’ was a classy offensive midfielder that played for Palermo, Roma, Elche and PSG, among others. After sharing locker room with Leo Messi in Argentina’s National Team for many years, Pastore has discussed the Barça super legend’s excellence in an interview with Blaugranagram’s partner, Flashscore.

“I spent more than six years alongside Leo on the national team. As a footballer, words aren’t necessary; what he continues to produce as he approaches 40 is astonishing. He has always been a leader. In the beginning, he led solely through his actions on the pitch. He didn’t need to shout; we all knew that when he stepped onto the grass, he would win us matches”, Pastore explains.

But Messi matured, and his leadership style changed. “As he matured, he also naturally assumed the role of vocal leader in the locker room: he always supported the players, instilled confidence, and demanded the highest level from everyone. Sharing a locker room with him was a privilege. Off the field, he’s calm, relaxed, and down-to-earth, and we’ve maintained a great friendship over the years.”

Pastore speaks very highly of Messi and his legacy: “his legacy is already immortal. For over two decades with Argentina, he won titles, played in unforgettable finals, and starred in moments etched in football history. Alongside Maradona, he stands at the pinnacle, as one of the icons who completely transformed Argentine football.”

The former PSG star also values Messi’s influence in future generations: “Leo’s influence will endure worldwide long after he retires. For any young person who wears the Argentina jersey, knowing that it was worn by Kempes, Maradona, and Messi is the ultimate motivation to pursue their dreams.2
