Girona have verbally agreed a loan deal with Barcelona to sign Marc-André ter Stegen until the end of the season. The player gave the green light last week, and the formal steps are expected to be completed this week.
Ter Stegen arrived early at the Ciutat Esportiva this morning to say goodbye to his teammates and the staff before the squad travelled to Prague. He is set to undergo a medical check-up this afternoon before heading to Girona.
According to sources coming out of Spain, the agreement between the two clubs is already set, and the paperwork is now being finalized. The loan is set to run until June 30, and Barcelona are expected to cover most of the goalkeeper’s salary for the rest of the season.
His reason for a move is mainly about minutes. Ter Stegen wants to play regularly for the rest of the season, with next summer’s World Cup in mind. Girona can offer him that, and it also keeps him close to his family, which was an important factor in his decision.
Ter Stegen has been at Barcelona since 2014, and he leaves as one of the most experienced players in the squad. If the medical goes smoothly and the final documents are signed, Girona should be able to announce the move soon.
