The handball debate, again: what was said and why it matters

Barcelona’s comeback at Levante came with controversy. A handball penalty against Alejandro Balde, given after a VAR check, sparked debate. In Spain, it was quickly compared to a recent no-call in El Clásico.

The decision on the night

After a VAR review, referee Alejandro Hernández Hernández awarded a penalty for handball on Balde after a shot from Morales. Mundo Deportivo’s referee analyst called it “a very harsh penalty,” noting Balde’s arm was close to his body.

Voices from the pitch and bench

  • Pedri questioned the criteria consistency in his post-match interview, saying decisions like these “should be explained properly for everyone.”
  • Hansi Flick admitted the play “wasn’t clear,” but stressed the team had to accept the decision and move on.

Inside the review process

Mundo Deportivo published the official VAR audio on Aug. 24. In it, the VAR asks for a review of a “possible penalty.” After a brief look, the referee decides: “penalty, no card.” The quick check shows how fine the margins are on calls like this.

Bottom line

Barcelona still got it done. They won 2–3: two quick goals after the break wiped out the 0–2 score, and Lamine Yamal’s late cross was turned in for an own goal. The debate will continue, but the result is clear — three points, and Barça stay top of the table.
