“What Barça Femení has done is admirable”

María José Pons has been one of the best Spanish goalkeepers of recent decades, renowned for her reflexes, agility, and aerial ability. Among other teams, Mariajo played for Barça Femení, when the team was nowehere near the global phenomenon it is today. In a recent interview with Blaugranagram’s partner, Flashscore, Pons discussed his playing days and also Barça Femení’s current achievements.

A Spanish international, Pons speaks very highly of Barça’s current success, “It’s admirable. I mean, it seems like Barça is almost obliged to qualify for the UWCL final every year, but they’re not”, and she continues, “it’s incredibly impressive, and the players themselves deserve credit, because it’s that self-discipline and self-motivation year after year that allow them to get to those levels”.

For Pons, people fail to realize how hard it is to consistently win, “for me, people take it for granted, but what they’re doing is unbelievable. It’s not easy to win any match, especially in Europe, where the physical level is extremely high. It’s true that Barça is technically better, but in Europe, the physical difference is less pronounced.”

Mariajo Pons also discusses his view on the UWCL final against Giráldez’s Lyon, “I don’t know, I have doubts about whether Barça will win it or not. I mean, Lyon has a good team and they have Giráldez, who knows FC Barcelona perfectly, he’s a fantastic coach and he knows how to hurt FC Barcelona and how to counter them. Barça is very strong, but I have doubts because of that, because Giráldez is on the other side. Simply because of that.”
