Barcelona continued their strong run of form with a commanding 3-0 victory over Mallorca at Camp Nou, extending their lead at the top of La Liga, as Marc Bernal and Lamine Yamal bloomed.
After an early scare from the visitors, the Catalan side grew into the game and asserted their dominance, with goals from Robert Lewandowski, Lamine Yamal, and Marc Bernal sealing a comfortable win.
Barcelona returned to Camp Nou after two successive away games to host a struggling Mallorca side that had managed only 6 league wins in 22 La Liga fixtures. The home side came into the match in excellent form, having won their previous 5 games, including a midweek Copa del Rey quarter-final victory over Albacete.
Hansi Flick made a total of 5 changes to the starting lineup from their Copa del Rey clash. Balde and Koundé replaced Gerard Martín and João Cancelo at full-back, while Pau Cubarsí came in for Araújo, with Eric García retaining his place in central defence. In midfield, Fermín López and Marc Casadó replaced Frenkie de Jong and Marc Bernal, while Dani Olmo kept his spot, resulting in a 4-3-3 setup with Pedri still sidelined through injury. In attack, Marcus Rashford started on the left wing in place of the injured Raphinha, with Lamine Yamal on the right and Robert Lewandowski leading the line and captaining the side. On the other hand, Mallorca fielded two former Barcelona players, with 19-year-old Jan Virgili starting on the left wing and Pablo Torre operating as an attacking midfielder under the guidance of coach Jagoba Arrasate.
The first major chance of the game fell to Mallorca in the 11th minute. They regained possession in their own half and launched a swift counter-attack through Virgili, who attempted to pick out Muriqi with a cross, but the delivery was blocked. Virgili stayed alert, recovered the ball from Koundé, and drove into the penalty area before sending in another cross, which Eric was able to divert behind for a corner. Although the danger was ultimately dealt with comfortably, it served as an early warning that Mallorca were not in Barcelona to settle for a draw, but to push for all three points.
A minute later, Virgili was again at the centre of the action, rising above Koundé to head a delivery on target, though Eric was able to gather it comfortably once more. Koundé’s struggles continued, as he repeatedly failed to contain the young winger, with Mallorca sustaining pressure in the early stages. By the 15th minute, Mallorca had already registered five touches inside Barcelona’s penalty area, while the Catalan side had managed just one touch in the opposition box.
In the 17th minute, the visitors squandered a significant opportunity. Virgili attacked down the right, combining with Mateu Morey, who released him into open space. Virgili then delivered a cross toward Muriqi at the back post, but the striker, stretching to reach the ball, could only divert it wide of the target.
Jan Virgili was easily the standout performer on the pitch in the opening stages, constantly troubling the Barcelona back line. Mallorca missed another opportunity in the 21st minute as the former Barcelona duo combined, with Pablo Torre finding Virgili on the left. The young winger drove inside and curled a shot toward the bottom left-hand corner, but Joan García gathered it comfortably to keep the score level at 0-0. The opening 25 minutes raised serious questions about Koundé’s declining form this season, as he failed to contain Virgili even once, while Mallorca continued to threaten with each passing attack.
Barcelona’s first real chance arrived in the 26th minute when Eric found Rashford, who cut in from the left and fired a right-footed effort toward the far corner, only for the shot to drift inches wide of the post. A minute later, Mallorca resumed their assault down the left flank, with Colombian full-back Johan Mojica’s cross only partially cleared to Pablo Maffeo, who delivered a precise first-time cross with the outside of his boot in search of Pablo Torre, but Barcelona managed to survive once again.
However, in the 28th minute, Barcelona’s captain broke the deadlock against the run of play. The move began with Balde releasing Rashford on the left, and the Englishman fired another precise effort that was blocked, ricocheting off Dani Olmo and falling perfectly into the path of Robert Lewandowski. The Polish striker made no mistake from close range, finishing with his right foot to give Barcelona the lead. Despite Mallorca’s strong start and a touch of misfortune, Lewandowski capitalised clinically to take his league tally to 10 goals. Although Olmo was credited with the assist, it was Rashford who was chiefly responsible for the breakthrough, with him and Eric Garcia standing out as Barcelona’s best performers in the opening 30 minutes.
Six minutes later, Barcelona created another opportunity as Rashford delivered a right-footed cross that found Cubarsí, but the centre-back was unable to direct his header on target. Barcelona’s tempo noticeably increased after Lewandowski’s opener, as they began to impose greater control on the game.
As the fourth official signalled three minutes of added time at the end of the first half, Barcelona carved out a golden opportunity. Rashford struck a free kick toward the top right corner, forcing Leo Román into an excellent save as he palmed the ball away. The rebound fell to Koundé, who squared it back across goal to Lamine Yamal at the back post. The winger looked certain to score but sliced his effort wide of the post with his stronger foot, missing a clear chance to double Barcelona’s advantage before the interval. The score remained 1-0 at the break. The first half ended with both teams’ left wingers emerging as the standout performers of the game.
Three minutes into the second half, Yamal dribbled past multiple defenders and entered the penalty area, where he was clipped by Mallorca left full-back Johan Mojica. Despite clear contact, both the on-field referee and VAR dismissed Barcelona’s appeals for a penalty, leaving the home side frustrated.
In the 54th minute, Barcelona struck the post once again. The hosts pushed to extend their lead as Balde’s cross from the left was only partially cleared, falling kindly to Casadó, who unleashed a volley that took a deflection off David López’s head before crashing against the post. Barcelona had completely neutralised Mallorca’s early threat and were now piling sustained pressure on the visitors as they searched for a second goal.
Mallorca eventually succumbed to the sustained pressure as Lamine Yamal produced a moment of brilliance from distance. Dani Olmo worked the ball short from the corner and laid it off to the teenage sensation, who shifted onto his left foot before unleashing a superb strike into the bottom right-hand corner, doubling Barcelona’s lead and adding another spectacular finish to his growing sensational goal catalogue.
The hosts’ persistence was rewarded as they established firm control of the game. The goal marked Olmo’s second assist of the game, while Lamine took his league tally to 10 goals, drawing level with Lewandowski.
Arrasate was quick to respond with a triple substitution, replacing Virgili, Torre, and Morey with Mateo Joseph, Sergi Darder, and Antonio Sánchez respectively, as the Spanish manager looked to regain control of the game after Mallorca failed to register a single shot on target in the second half.
Hansi Flick responded five minutes later with two substitutions, withdrawing Marcus Rashford for Ferran Torres and introducing Marc Bernal in place of Dani Olmo. The changes saw Barcelona revert to a 4-2-3-1 system, with Fermín López operating as the attacking midfielder, Bernal partnering Casadó in the double pivot, and Ferran Torres taking up a role on the left wing. By the 72nd minute, Barcelona had completed 225 passes in the second half compared to Mallorca’s 57, underlining the Catalan side’s complete domination. Lamine Yamal almost added his second in the 75th minute, taking a touch before bending a left-footed effort toward the far corner, but his shot drifted just half a yard wide.
Mallorca survived another scare as Barcelona continued to edge closer to making it 3-0. Arrasate used his remaining two substitutions by introducing Manu Morlanes and Javi Liabrés in place of Samu and Muriqi, respectively. Flick responded with two further changes of his own, bringing on João Cancelo for Lewandowski and shifting Ferran Torres into his preferred striker role, while Cancelo moved up to operate on the left wing.
Roony Bardghji replaced Lamine Yamal, who left the pitch to a standing ovation from the Nou Camp crowd. Mallorca’s first major chance of the second half arrived in the 80th minute, as David López released the fresh legs of Antonio Sánchez, who fired a right-footed effort toward goal. However, Joan García reacted sharply to get down and make the save, ending Mallorca’s attack and preserving Barcelona’s clean sheet. Barcelona shut down any hopes of a Mallorca comeback as Marc Bernal, La Masia’s midfield prodigy, opened his senior goal-scoring account in style.
The hosts broke forward on the counter, with Ferran Torres flicking the ball into Ronny Bardghji, who then released Fermín López to send Bernal through on goal. The teenager showed outstanding composure, feinting a shot to send Pablo Maffeo to the ground before delicately placing the ball into the bottom right-hand corner. It was a striker’s finish from a midfielder, highlighting the attacking instincts and dribbling ability that defined Bernal’s development as an attacking midfielder in the academy ranks.
Flick celebrated Bernal’s debut goal with visible delight but wasted no time in making his final substitution, introducing Tommy Marqués from the bench to hand him his senior debut. Fermín López was withdrawn, leaving Barcelona with three defensive midfielders on the pitch for the closing minutes as the Catalan side looked to see out the game in control.
In the 90th minute, Mateo Joseph went in search of a consolation goal, but his wild effort sailed high into the crowd, before the fourth official indicated two minutes of stoppage time. Javi Liabrés also tried his luck in the dying moments, but his effort flew over the crossbar as well. Referee Alejandra González then blew the final whistle, confirming Barcelona’s victory and securing all three points to move four points clear of Real Madrid at the top of the table.
The Catalan side are also on course to maintain a 100 percent winning record at home in La Liga. Barcelona recovered from an underwhelming first-half display to finish the game with 2.73 expected goals, 24 total shots, and seven on target. Attention now turns to a demanding run of fixtures, with a Copa del Rey semi-final first leg away at the Metropolitano against Diego Simeone’s Atlético Madrid, followed by a Catalan derby against mid-table Girona at the Estadi Municipal de Montilivi.
Barcelona face Atlético de Madrid next, with both Raphinha and Marcus Rashford not in contention for the first leg of the Copa del Rey semi-final.
