Marc-André ter Stegen has a contract until 2022 with Barcelona and during the last months, a lot about his contract renewal and contract improvement has been said.

The renewal of German goalkeeper’s contract is one of the club’s priority given his importance and prominence in the team throughout the last seasons. Lately, his continuity has been questioned due to the economic aspirations of the 28-year-old goalkeeper and the sporting project of the Catalan club that does not end up convincing him.

Negotiations between the two parties began late last year but did not flow as expected and then those talks had to be paused due to the pandemic. However, Barcelona has always been ter Stegen’s preference, although the German wants a financial effort as he is seen as a vital player for the squad.

On Monday, the footballers returned to Barcelona after six days of vacation and this week the preparations for the Champions League match against Naples have begun. During Marc-André Ter Stegen’s arrival in Barcelona, he was asked about his contract renewal with the Catalan club to which the Mochengladbach-born goalkeeper responded: “we’ll see.”

According to Santi Ovalle on the SER Catalunya talk show “Què t’hi jugues”, the renewal of the German goalkeeper is not closed. Ter Stegen has asked to be part of the second-highest scale from the squad’s salaries, and both the player and the club agree that there is a need to negotiate. He is one of the most decisive players in the squad and the agreement, according to the same report, will be closed at a high amount although not the one requested by the German.

The two postures are close to a deal even though not the difficulties are not just financial, Ter Stegen has demonstrated his professionalism and mentality regarding the team’s commitment and sporting objectives but there are aspects within the dressing room that do not convince him.

According to SER Catalunya, both Marc-André Ter Stegen wants to continue at Barcelona and Barça wants to extend their link with the German goalkeeper, both parts are convinced of reaching an agreement.

Ter Stegen has been the backbone of the team, along with Lionel Messi, for the past few seasons and has been key in critical moments that have ultimately won Barça leagues. With the talks between the player and the club now resumed, an agreement could come soon.
