According to Cataluyna Ràdio, Mateu Alemany has presented a contract extension with more favourable terms for the club to Sergio Busquets’ representative, as part of the club’s attempt to reduce the wage bill for the coming fiscal year.

Sergio Busquets’ current contract ends in 2023, but he is one of the highest earners in the club. He is considered an essential player by the technical staff and coach Ronald Koeman, so a possible exit is ruled out. Due to this, Barça have opted to extend his contract by a further two years, until 2025.

His earnings in the new contract would be halved, meaning he would earn the same amount of money he would have earned on the current contract in four years instead of two years. It is likely that Busquets will accept this offer, as he is prepared to help the team financially and he cannot imagine himself outside of Barcelona. However, it remains to be seen what his final decision will be, as he is fully focused on captaining the Spanish National Team in EURO 2020.
